The world is talking about Global Warming, Climate Change, and risks to the future generation. But, the very base of Indian Civilization lies in Sustainable Development. Meet the legends of India who have contributed their lives to Environmental Conservation.

107-year-old Padma Shri Saalumarada Thimmakka is known for growing around 385 banyan trees along a four-kilometer stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur. She has been honored with the National Citizen’s Award of India for planting and tending more than 8,000 trees in Karnataka.

Padma Shri Jadav “Molai” Payeng, an environmental activist from Assam, also popularly known as the “Forest Man of India” has planted and tended trees on a sandbar of the river Brahmaputra,  turning it into a forest reserve. The Molai forest’ located near Kokilamukh is named after him and encompasses an area of about 550 hectares.

The villagers of Piplantri plant 111 trees every time a girl child is born. People here have managed to plant over 3,50,000 trees. Shyam Sundar Paliwal, a former Sarpanch of this village started this initiative in the memory of his daughter Kiran, who died a few years ago.

Moirangthem Loiya is responsible for replanting a forest named ‘Punshilok,’ meaning Spring of Life.  Today, Punshilok forest area covers around 300 acres. It is rich in flora and fauna with varieties of trees, shrubs, and medical plants. Around 250 species of plants and around 25 species of bamboo grow here. The green cover is a home to variety of birds, snakes, and wild animals like barking deer, pangolin, porcupine, mongoose, leopard cat, deer, among others.

Dr. Lingaraju Yale is a well-known and highly respected geohydrologist of India. With his team of 20 he has rejuvenated over 25 rivers of state Maharashtra, 3 rivers of state Karnataka, 4 rivers of Tamil Nadu and 1 river of state Kerala since 2013.

India, the land where nature is worshipped as Goddess, the list of the legends who have contributed their lives to the conservation of environment and protection of nature is unending. They have set an example for generations to follow. Kudos to their hard work, determination, and sacrifices. Jai Hind!
