Smt. Sushma Swaraj succumbs to cardiac arrest. India mourns in grief of losing the “Best Loved Politician”

“प्रधान मंत्री जी – आपका हार्दिक अभिनन्दन. मैं अपने जीवन में इस दिन को देखने की प्रतीक्षा कर रही थी. @narendramodi ji – Thank you Prime Minister. Thank you very much. I was waiting to see this day in my lifetime.”-3 hours prior to her demise, Smt. Sushma Swaraj tweeted on social media.

Sushma Ji was a prolific orator and outstanding Parliamentarian with an excellent linguistic command. She was designated as India’s “best-loved politician” by the US daily Wall Street Journal. Few years ago, she had a kidney transplant and was suffering poor health condition from a long time. She was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where she succumbed to cardiac arrest, late night on Tuesday, at the age of 67.

Today her mortal remains were brought to the BJP headquarters, and kept for three hours, allowing people to pay tribute. Her body was cremated with full state of honors at Lodhi Road Electric Crematorium in Delhi.

She was a senior leader of Bhartiya Janata Party and served as the Minister of External Affairs of India, and was the second woman to hold the office, after Indira Gandhi. She was a prominent Supreme Court lawyer and became the youngest cabinet minister of Indian state of Haryana. She was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. At the age of 25 she served as 5th Chief Minister of Delhi, in 1998 for a short duration. Retaining her seat by a margin of over 400,000 votes, she won the Vidisha constituency in Madhya Pradesh for a second term in the 2014 general election. She established six All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhuvneshwar, Bhopal, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh, during her tenure as Union Health Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government. Due to poor health conditions, she did not join the Modi Government during the 2019 Loksabha Elections.

Where, whole Nation mourns over her demise, key politicians and celebrities expressed their condolence over this huge loss. Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi extremely moved by her demise, was seen with teary eyes. He expressed his condolences to Smt Sushma Swaraj, by tweeting on social media. His tweets read: “A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service and bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people. An excellent administrator, Sushma Ji set high standards in every Ministry she handled. She played a key role in bettering India’s ties with various nations. As a Minister we also saw her compassionate side, helping fellow Indians who were in distress in any part of the world.”

He added “Sushma Ji was a prolific orator and outstanding Parliamentarian. She was admired and revered across party lines. She was uncompromising when it came to matters of ideology and interests of the BJP, whose growth she immensely contributed to. I can’t forget the manner in which Sushma Ji worked tirelessly as EAM in the last 5 years. Even when her health was not good, she would do everything possible to do justice to her work and remain up to date with matters of her Ministry. The spirit and commitment were unparalleled.”

“Sushma Ji’s demise is a personal loss. She will be remembered fondly for everything that she’s done for India. My thoughts are with her family, supporters, and admirers in this very unfortunate hour. Om Shanti.”-paying tribute to Sushma Ji, the Prime Minister expressed his condolence.
