‘Talaq Talaq Talaq!’ A curse for every Muslim woman that shatters her world, leaving her vulnerable. No appeal, no hearing, direct VERDICT. But not anymore. ‘Triple Talaq’ or ‘Talaq-e-biddat’ abolished by Parliament. Bill passed in Rajyasabha criminalizing instant Triple Talaq as “Cognizable and Non-billable offense” with 3-years of imprisonment and subsequent fine.
The Parliament has abolished an archaic medieval practice by criminalizing Muslim instant divorce with the government beating the opposition by 99-84 votes after a 5-hour long debate.
Under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill; pronouncement of ‘triple talaq’ by any Muslim husband in “oral, written, electronic or any other form” shall be “illegal and void”; criminalizing it as a “cognizable and non-bailable” offense punishable with three years of imprisonment and subsequent monetary fine.
The law empowers married Muslim women pronounced with ‘triple talaq’ to take legal actions, empowering her to seek “subsistence allowance” for herself and dependent children, granting her the custody of minor children.
Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi hailed the decision of Parliament. Expressing gratitude towards the supporters he congratulated India on this historic day. “An archaic and medieval practice has finally been confined to the dustbin of history! Parliament abolishes Triple Talaq and corrects a historical wrong done to Muslim women. This is a victory of gender justice and will further equality in society. India rejoices today!” he tweeted on social media.
He added; “This is an occasion to salute the remarkable courage of those Muslim women who have suffered great wrongs just due to the practice of Triple Talaq. The abolition of Triple Talaq will contribute to women empowerment and give women the dignity they deserve in our society.”
“I thank all parties and MPs who have supported the passage of The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 in both Houses of Parliament. They have risen to the occasion and this step of theirs will forever be remembered in India’s history.”– he concluded.
A social-stigma of gender inequality and women injustice has come to an end. A big shout-out to all the Muslim Women who fought courageously seeking JUSTICE and to the Governance for a justified verdict. This day will be marked in India’s history with golden letters.
