A heartily tribute to Sir APJ Abdul Kalam, ‘The Missile Man of India’ on his death Anniversary.

A heartily tribute to the ‘People’s President’ and the ‘Missile Man of India’ on his death anniversary.

This Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan; the holder of 40 doctorate degrees and honored with Bharat Ratna, Hoover Medal, King Charles II Medal, IEEE Honorary Membership, Ramanujan Award, International von Kármán Wings Award and The Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration. The 11th President of India referred affectionately as ‘The People’s President’ and ‘The Missile Man of India’ whose ingenious contribution in space aeronautics, nuclear weapons, ISRO DRDO and politics is incredible.

He was the Project Director of India’s first satellite mission named ‘Rohini’. During his tenure in DRDO, he headed the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) to develop five different missiles- Prithvi, Agni, Trishul, Akash, Nag. He thus came to be known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He also played a pivotal organizational, technical, and political role in India’s Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974. Penning down a number of books and opening a number of institutions, his aim was to motivate the young ignited minds of India with a message “My message to the youth is to have courage to think differently, courage to invent, to travel the unexplored path, courage to discover the impossible and to conquer the problems and succeed. These are great qualities and the youth must work towards it.”

The news of his sudden death came like a shock to the country. He collapsed of cardiac arrest while delivering a lecture on “Creating a Livable Planet Earth” at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong on 27th of July 2015. His last words, to his aide Srijan Pal Singh, were reportedly: “Funny guy! Are you doing well?” Whole country paid tribute with a heavy heart, with thousands attending his funeral ceremony at his hometown Rameshwaram, where he was buried with full states of honors. The Government of India declared a seven-day state mourning period as a mark of respect.

The National Memorial was built in the memory of Sir APJ Abdul Kalam by the DRDO at Pei Karumbu in the Island town of Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu; which was inaugurated by Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. “Dream is not that you see in sleep, dream is something that does not let you sleep!” The grief of his loss is immeasurable.
