Meet Shyam Saran Negi, the first voter of Independent India!

The 103-year-old, first voter of Independent India, Shyam Saran Negi, from Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh, was born on 1st of July 1917. Voting in Panchayat, Rajyasaha, Vidhansabha or Loksabha; Negi have never missed to vote.

Polling in Himachal Pradesh was scheduled six months earlier than other states of India, due to extreme weather conditions. Shaym Saran Negi, then a Government School Teacher, was drafted for poll duty, in first election of Independent India. Negi first casted his vote early in the morning and then rushed to poll duty, fulfilling his responsibility a citizen.

“We, the citizen of India, with all our sincerity, compassion and patriotism; must cast our vote wisely. Only then our country will progress and rise to become the ‘Sone ki Chidiya’ once again”; says the 103-year-old, first voter of Independent India, Shyam Saran Negi.
